Comr. Ogar Favour Johobe, President of the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS), has denied allegations linking him to cultism following an incident at the University of Calabar (UNICAL).
Ogar, popularly known as Noble, described the publications circulating online about the incident as false and damaging to his reputation, insisting that his visit to UNICAL on Thursday was strictly for consultation with a friend seeking to contest for a position in NACRISS Worldwide.
In a public statement and disclaimer signed by himself and in his capacity, on Saturday, October 24, 2026, the UNICROSS SUG president said his visit had no connection with cultism, unlawful assembly or any activity capable of threatening the peace and security of the university community.
He explained that he arrived at UNICAL at about 11:00 a.m., parked his vehicle and sat on a nearby cement seat before some security operatives called him and others over.
According to him, the operatives requested their identities and the institutions they represented, after which they were directed to enter a vehicle and taken to a police station.
Ogar expressed concern over the publication that followed the incident, alleging that information linking him to cultism was released before he was questioned or asked to make a statement.
“At the time the statement was released, I had not been questioned, asked to make a statement, or informed of any findings from an investigation establishing my alleged involvement in cultism,” he said.
He maintained that the publication had created a damaging impression about his character without establishing the facts of the incident.
“Let me state categorically that I am not a cultist,” Ogar declared, adding that he was neither apprehended inside a bush nor aware of or involved in any gathering intended to disrupt peace and security at the university.
While acknowledging the responsibility of the Nigeria Police Force to maintain law and order, he called for accuracy, fairness and due process in the public communication of allegations against individuals.
He argued that allegations of such magnitude should not be presented in a manner that prejudges an individual’s character before the facts have been properly established.
The UNICROSS SUG president consequently called on the Cross River State Police Command to urgently review and clarify the publication attributed to the police concerning the incident.
He also requested the formal correction of any inaccurate or misleading information about him and his institution to prevent further reputational damage.
Ogar further warned that he would consider all lawful options available to protect his reputation and seek redress if what he described as false or unsubstantiated allegations continued to circulate.
“As the President of the Students’ Union Government of UNICROSS, I understand the responsibility that comes with my office and remain committed to peace, responsible leadership, and the protection of the image and integrity of my institution,” he said.
He added that the statement was intended to present his account of the incident, correct what he considered a misleading public narrative and demand fairness in the handling of the matter.
