Two Nigerian International, Frank Onyeka and Taiwo Awoniyi featured for newly promoted Coventry City, who lost to Premier League champions Arsenal in the opening fixture of the 2026/2027 season.
The Gunners won the game 3-0 at the Emirates stadium in a quest to retain their title.
Coventry were outweighed as the champions put three past them in the first and second half. Thank to goals from Kai Havertz (15′), Bukayo Saka (23′), and Martin Oedegaard (49′).
Onyeka started and finished the game for Coventry in the defensive midfield, while Awoniyi came in the 70th minute in the second half for Ellis Simms up front.
Awoniyi tried to make something happened for Coventry, but Arsenal were too strong, overshadowing the midfield mounted by Onyeka.
The Super Eagles stars would hope to get a better result in the next fixture as the Championship champions face fellow newly promoted side, Hull City.
