Abia Police arrest two over alleged government property theft

The Abia State Police Command has arrested two suspects for allegedly vandalising and stealing government property in Uzuakoli, recovering dozens of iron materials, electrical poles and tools believed to have been used in the crime.
The Command disclosed this in a press release issued on Tuesday by DSP Maureen Chioma Chinaka, spokesperson for the Commissioner of Police.
According to the statement, the suspects were identified as 23-year-old Emmanuel Ogonna and 25-year-old Ifeanychukwu Oko, both natives of Lohom in Uzuakoli Local Government Area of Abia State.
The police said the suspects were apprehended on June 19, 2026, following actionable intelligence.
According to the statement, operatives attached to the Mike Okiro Divisional Police Headquarters intercepted the suspects during a stop-and-search operation along Uzuakoli Road while they were travelling in an auto-rickshaw, popularly known as Keke Napep.
Items recovered from the suspects included 49 pieces of angle irons, two saws, three spanners, three small iron boards and 86 electrical poles, all suspected to have been vandalised and stolen from government property.
The Command stated that the suspects confessed during interrogation to vandalising and stealing the recovered items.
“The suspects made confessional statements, admitting to vandalising and stealing the listed exhibits recovered, and the case was transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet investigation and diligent prosecution,” the statement said.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Danladi Isa, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to preventing and detecting crime across the state.
He urged residents to support the police by promptly reporting suspicious persons and activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency hotlines.
The police said public cooperation remains critical to tackling vandalism, theft of public infrastructure and other criminal activities across Abia State.
