The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed all officers and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force to immediately desist from engaging in unauthorised social media activities capable of undermining the integrity, professionalism, and public image of the Force.
The directive, issued on Tuesday, follows growing concerns over the increasing trend of police personnel creating and publishing videos, conducting live broadcasts, and participating in other social media activities while in uniform or in situations that clearly identify them as members of the Nigeria Police Force without official authorisation.
According to a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu, the Inspector-General stressed that while social media remains an important platform for communication and public engagement, its use by serving police officers must strictly comply with existing laws, regulations, and the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy.
The IGP warned that officers are prohibited from creating or sharing unauthorised content while wearing police uniforms, commenting publicly on official police matters, disclosing sensitive operational information, or using their status as police officers for personal promotion, entertainment, or commercial purposes.
He directed Commissioners of Police, Heads of Departments, Commanders, and other supervisory officers to immediately sensitise personnel under their commands and ensure strict enforcement of the directive.
The statement noted that supervisory officers would be held accountable for any failure to take appropriate disciplinary action against officers who violate the directive within their respective commands.
To strengthen compliance, the Inspector-General also directed the Force Intelligence Department (FID) and the Professional Standards Department (X-Squad) to intensify the monitoring of social media platforms and identify officers engaging in activities inconsistent with the professional standards and ethical expectations of the Nigeria Police Force.
The police leadership said the measure is aimed at preserving the credibility of the Force, protecting sensitive operational information, and ensuring responsible public communication by serving personnel.
Reaffirming the Force’s commitment to discipline and professionalism, the Nigeria Police Force assured Nigerians of its continued dedication to maintaining public trust, institutional integrity, and effective policing.
