The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) has installed a 6KVA solar power system in the Dean’s Office and adjoining offices within the Deanery to provide reliable power supply and strengthen practical learning in renewable energy technology.

According to the Dean of Faculty, Engr. Prof. Simon Ogbeche Odey, the project was conceived and actualised as part of the practical requirements of GET 306 – Renewable Energy Systems and Technology, in line with the Course Learning Outcomes (CLOs) prescribed by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Prof. Odey explained that the installation was designed to bridge the gap between theoretical instruction and practical experience by providing students with a functional renewable energy system within the Faculty.

The system comprises 4.7kWp solar panels, a 6kW hybrid inverter and 5kWh battery storage, alongside other accessories. It was professionally installed and tested to ensure efficient operation and is currently supplying uninterrupted power to essential loads, including lighting, computers, printing and other critical equipment in the Dean’s Office.

Beyond providing an alternative power source, the project serves as a practical laboratory where students can gain first-hand experience in solar power system design, sizing, installation, operation and maintenance.

Prof. Odey who is also the Dean of Deans, noted that the installation would also provide students with a practical case study for system design, load analysis and cost-benefit evaluation, while encouraging research and innovation in renewable energy within the Faculty.

He further stated that the project demonstrates the Faculty’s commitment to practical and experiential learning, as well as the promotion of sustainable energy solutions within the University.

The solar installation is also expected to reduce the Deanery’s dependence on public electricity supply and the University’s generator, while ensuring more stable power for essential academic and administrative activities.

The initiative reflects the commitment of the administration of the Vice Chancellor of UNICROSS, Prof. Francisca Bassey, to supporting practical learning, innovation and the development of infrastructure that enhances teaching and research across the University.

The Faculty of Engineering expressed appreciation to the Vice Chancellor for the opportunity to serve and contribute to the University’s academic and technological development.
