Ken Egbas, who claims victory in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) primary election for the Obubra/Etung Federal Constituency, has alleged a coordinated attempt to replace his name with that of a defeated aspirant through bribery and administrative manipulation.
In a statement titled “An Official Statement on the Obubra/Etung Federal Constituency Primary Election: Libel, Criminal Circumvention, and the Sanctity of the Democratic Mandate,” Egbas insisted that he was the duly elected candidate following the party’s primary election held on May 29, 2026.
He said the election results, as documented by the party’s electoral committee, showed that he secured the highest number of valid votes cast and was officially declared winner.
According to Egbas, the electoral committee produced five identical copies of the result sheets, all of which were signed and retained by committee members and reflected him as the winner of the contest.
He further disclosed that the NDC national secretariat invited candidates who emerged from non-consensus constituencies to collect their nomination forms in Abuja, adding that he was issued the official nomination form on June 10.
He alleged that his opponent was denied access to the same form after party officials reportedly found discrepancies between his credentials and the records of the recognised winner.
Egbas alleged attempt to alter the party’s candidate list through financial inducement.
He claimed that ₦5 million was paid into the account of a party official to facilitate the replacement of his name on the list of candidates.
Describing the alleged action as a direct attack on the democratic process, Egbas said he immediately petitioned the party leadership in Abuja.
He stated that following the complaint, the party’s National Leader, Seriake Dickson, directed party executives to reverse the alleged substitution and ensure that the certified winner remained the party’s candidate.
Egbas also alleged irregularities during the conduct of the primary election in Etung Local Government Area.
According to him, electoral materials meant for the area were allegedly hijacked, preventing officials appointed by the electoral committee from carrying out their duties.
He said the secretary of the electoral committee subsequently ordered the cancellation of the Etung results after becoming aware of the situation.
He argued that any effort to reinstate the cancelled results would be unlawful and maintained that he remained the winner even if the disputed votes were counted.
Egbas said his camp would continue to pursue legal and internal party channels to protect what he described as the mandate freely given to him by delegates.
“We will not be intimidated, nor will we allow a mandate purchased through backroom bribery to supersede the sovereign will of the people,” he said.
Adding, “The truth cannot be substituted. The mandate will be defended.”
At press time, the NDC is yet to issued an official statement that we know of, regarding the matter.
