The Catholic Youth Organisation of Nigeria (CYON), Jos Archdiocese, has expressed concern over what it described as inappropriate conduct by some graduating students of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) during their Final Year Brethren (FYB) Week celebrations.
In a press statement issued on July 23, 2026, and signed by its President, Paul Pwajok Bot, the organisation said photographs circulating on social media showed actions that many Catholics and members of the public considered inconsistent with the respect traditionally accorded to religious attire and symbols.
According to the organisation, while graduation marks an important academic achievement deserving of celebration, such celebrations should be conducted with dignity, decency and respect for religious values.
CYON stated that the actions seen in the photographs could be interpreted as disrespectful to the Catholic priesthood and the Christian faith.
“Graduation is a significant milestone that marks years of hard work, discipline, and academic excellence. It is an occasion that deserves to be celebrated with dignity, decency, and respect for the values that educational institutions and society seek to uphold,” the statement read.
The youth body stressed that although individuals have the freedom to celebrate their achievements, such celebrations should not undermine the sacredness of religious vocations.
As an organisation dedicated to the moral, spiritual and social formation of young people, CYON urged Catholic youths and students to be mindful of their conduct, particularly in public spaces and on social media.
It reminded young Christians that they are called to represent Christ through modesty, respect and responsible behaviour.
The organisation also encouraged graduating students across higher institutions to celebrate their academic success in ways that inspire younger generations while reflecting integrity, humility and mutual respect.
While expressing disappointment over the incident, CYON appealed to members of the public to avoid online harassment, hate speech or personal attacks against those involved.
It maintained that any form of correction should be guided by charity, dialogue and the Christian principles of forgiveness and reconciliation.
The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to promoting values that uphold human dignity, respect for religious institutions and responsible youth engagement.
CYON expressed hope that the incident would encourage reflection and a renewed commitment to moral values among young people.
The organisation concluded by praying that God would bless Christian youths with wisdom, humility and a deeper appreciation of the sacredness of the Christian faith and the dignity of every human person.
