35 widows have allegedly been given ₦1,000 each for welcoming Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, in Calabar, Cross River State.
Daily Lamp reports that Sen. Tinubu visited Cross River State last week and announced a total donation of ₦515 million as relief intervention on Friday, September 4, 2026.
As part of the donation, ₦25 million was for each of the 18 business owners affected by the inferno, amounting to ₦450 million.
An additional ₦50 million was presented to the wife of the Cross River State Governor, Bishop Eyoanwan Otu, to support women’s groups, while ₦15 million was given to women who welcomed her to the state.
However, that is not the case as of today; women are raising alarm over the ill-treatment of widows who welcomed Sen. Tinubu to the State.
Magdalene Eyoma, Arise Correspondent in Cross River State, who shared the complaint she received on WhatsApp on her Facebook page, wrote: “If it is true that 35 widows who went to welcome the wife of the president, Sen. Remi Tinubu, are to be given 1k each, everybody involved is wrong. Very wrong. ₦50million o.”
Below was the message of the screenshot shared by Eyoma on Facebook:
“Yesterday I was given #35,000 TO share to Widows :FOR the 30 that were given APC UNIFORM SO let us be Honest here After you had spent so much on transport moving around you now have to collect #1,000 I will suggest you write your Name and Account details so POS can transfer to you However if you want to pay transport to 73MCC you can do that as well Thank you and God bless Good morning my sweetest Sisters (sic).”
Another woman familiar with the matter, Esther Onwe, commented: “We are still dragging this on another forum,women were brought out and the ‘comish’ gave just 50k to be shared amongst the women.Women that stood for hours at the airport (sic).”
Also commenting, Atim Coco-Bassey, said: “There were more than 35 widows who went out to receive Her Excellency. They are only asking for the 35 women that were given APC uniform.”
Responding, Faith Okon-Egbujiem, an aide to the Wife of the Governor, wrote: “Magdalene Eyoma, please can you find out who is requesting for their accounts? I want to check something.
“10k each was demobilosation funds for women who waited or returned to Peregrino that evening.
“Now, there was balance and Her Excellency asked that it be shared to group leaders for those members who couldn’t wait or return but received the First Lady at the Airport. Nobody was to receive 1,000!!!”
