The Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas (FPOG), Bonny, Rivers State, has recorded another milestone with the groundbreaking ceremony for a 2.2-megawatt peak (MWp) solar grid power plant, a project expected to improve electricity supply for teaching, research and other institutional activities.
The ceremony, held on Friday, July 17, 2026, was performed by a delegation from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) led by Architect Inene Erivwo.
According to a statement issued by the Polytechnic’s Senior Assistant Registrar and Public Relations Officer, Anthony Ogbe, the project marks another step in the institution’s drive towards strengthening infrastructure and enhancing the learning environment.
The statement attributed the institution’s steady progress to the leadership of the Rector, Dr Victor Okolobah, describing his administration as one focused on purposeful leadership, strategic decision-making and institutional development.
It noted that the 2.2MWp solar grid power plant will significantly improve the Polytechnic’s capacity to deliver quality academic programmes and support research by providing a more reliable source of electricity.
The project is designed to generate electricity from sunlight through solar panels, with an inverter converting the generated direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC) for distribution through the electrical grid or local mini-grid network.
When completed, the power plant is expected to supply electricity across the Polytechnic community and could also extend power to neighbouring communities.
The management expressed optimism that the project would further position the Federal Polytechnic of Oil and Gas, Bonny, as a growing centre for technological education and innovation in Nigeria.
The statement concluded that the institution remained committed to sustained growth and development, describing its current trajectory as one of continuous progress.
