The Cross River State Police Command has engaged the management of the University of Calabar (UNICAL) on strengthening security collaboration to tackle cultism, political thuggery, digital violence and other emerging threats.
The Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Ajo Geoffrey Ordue, held discussions with the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Offiong Efanga Offiong, at his office on Monday, September 7, 2026.
The meeting formed part of the command’s ongoing stakeholder engagements with critical institutions aimed at strengthening collaboration and improving security across the state.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, on Tuesday, the engagement focused on campus safety, student wellbeing and proactive crime prevention.
The Vice Chancellor formally welcomed CP Ordue to Cross River State and expressed the university’s readiness to sustain and deepen its partnership with the Police Command throughout his tenure.
Prof. Offiong said the collaboration would be particularly important in safeguarding members of the university community and maintaining a peaceful environment for teaching, learning and research.
Responding, CP Ordue stressed the importance of proactive policing, early intervention and sustained engagement between the Police Command, university management and students.
A major focus of the meeting was the proposed introduction of the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices (POCACOV) to the university.
The initiative is expected to provide a platform for sensitisation and engagement with students on the dangers of cultism, violence, drug abuse and other social vices.
The Commissioner also highlighted the need for stronger engagement with young people ahead of the forthcoming elections.
He urged stakeholders to discourage political thuggery, digital thuggery, online incitement and other forms of youth-driven violence that could threaten peaceful electoral processes.
CP Ordue reaffirmed the command’s commitment to community policing based on partnership, prevention and intelligence-led engagement.
He said stronger collaboration with educational institutions would help protect lives, promote responsible citizenship and sustain peace in Cross River State.
The Police Command said it remained committed to building strategic partnerships capable of enhancing public safety and contributing to a peaceful and secure state.
