The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Cross River State Command, has strengthened its partnership with quarry operators and suppliers to improve security in the state’s solid minerals sector.
The State Commandant, CC Okarazu Chima, gave the assurance when he received the executive members of the Union of Tipper, Suppliers and Quarry Employers of Nigeria, led by its State Chairman, Comrade Charles Bassey, during a working courtesy visit to the Command Headquarters in Calabar.
The visit was aimed at introducing the newly constituted leadership of the union and establishing a stronger operational relationship with the NSCDC.
Bassey commended the Commandant for what he described as his dynamic leadership and operational achievements, pledging the union’s support through credible intelligence sharing.
He said the union would work with the Corps to expose illegal operators and criminal elements operating within the solid minerals sector.
Responding, Okarazu described the union as a key stakeholder in Cross River State’s infrastructural development and economic growth.
He said the protection of solid minerals, which he described as Critical National Assets, remained a core responsibility of the NSCDC.
The Commandant assured licensed quarry operators and legitimate suppliers of adequate security coverage, while warning that harassment and intimidation of lawful businesses would not be tolerated.
According to him, the Corps would continue to work with relevant stakeholders to create a secure environment for legitimate economic activities within the sector.
The meeting culminated in an agreement to establish a direct communication channel between the union’s Task Force and the NSCDC Solid Minerals Protection Unit.
The channel is expected to facilitate real-time intelligence sharing and strengthen efforts to identify and combat illegal mining and other criminal activities in the sector.
The partnership is expected to further support the NSCDC’s efforts to protect Cross River State’s solid minerals resources while promoting sustainable economic development.
