Since assuming office on May 29, 2023, Cross River State Governor, Senator Bassey Otu, has successfully renewed the Carnival Calabar, Africa’s biggest street party, by adding fresh momentum and ideas while increasing its financial benefits and global standing with strategic investments.
Former Minister for Tourism, High Chief Edem Duke, applauded Governor Otu for “reinstating vitality shortly after taking office,” beginning a new transformative period for Central Nigeria’s leading tourism event that resonates widely.
Governor Otu’s administration has concentrated on rebranding and uplifting Carnival Calabar via strategic themes, positioning it as an economic force, unveiling “Our Shared Prosperity” for 2024 to attract investors from various backgrounds, “Traces of Time” for the 20th Anniversary in 2025 to mark important milestones, and “Rethinking Our Collective Destiny” for 2026 to boost engagement through inclusive measures.
The 2025 edition delivered a grander celebration, drawing global socialites who enriched the atmosphere, with online voting for 2026 turning spectators into participants through the European Cultural Centre partnership for enhanced marketing.
The governor sanctioned ₦18 billion for infrastructure, rehabilitating key resorts like Obudu and Tinapa with upgrades, remodelling hotels for better standards, building a pier harbour for waterfront appeal, and developing Axari Towers for increased lodging capacity. CallyAir improved aviation links, Christmas lights enhanced streets with beauty, and security guaranteed safety for a seamless experience.
Governor Otu earned major awards for economic and tourism leadership, with benefits reaching communities through job creation and local empowerment in related industries. The Portuguese Ambassador praised its comparison to world-famous carnivals, emphasising its competitive edge.
Governor Otu honours past leaders while building a citizen-focused future with coherent planning, securing world-class hotels and positioning the carnival as Nigeria’s tourism flagship for sustained, long-term growth and recognition.
