The Cross River State House of Assembly has commenced legislative consideration of the proposed constitutional amendment seeking to establish State Police in the country.
The bill titled: “A Bill for an Act to amend the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,1999, to provide for the Establishment of State Police Services and for Related Matters in the 36 States of the Federation,” was transmitted by the National Assembly to the 36 State Houses of Assembly for consideration.
The document contains the proposed amendment seeking to provide a constitutional framework for the establishment of State Police Services while retaining the Nigeria Police Force as the Federal Police Service.
The National Assembly transmission included the relevant Bill, votes and proceedings of both chambers of the National Assembly and other documents relating to the proposed constitutional alteration.
During plenary, Members moved and seconded a motion for the correspondence to be called, received and laid on the table. The House further agreed to receive the document as a working document for consideration.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Elvert Ayambem, stressed that the document would undergo the normal legislative process of consideration and debate before the House arrives at a position on the proposed amendment.
The House subsequently took the First Reading of the Bill.
