Counsel to public commentator and activist MC Okrika has called for a full police investigation into an alleged assault involving his client at Hotel 45, Ikom, Cross River State.
In a statement dated September 6, 2026, and signed by T.O. Teke, Esq., of T.O. Teke Law Office & Co, the lawyer said a confrontation occurred at the hotel involving individuals allegedly identified as political associates of an aspiring senatorial candidate, Odenewa.
According to the statement obtained by Daily Lamp on Monday, Okrika was allegedly slapped, beaten and had a drink poured on him during the confrontation.
The lawyer said the account was based on information provided by Okrika and eyewitnesses, while urging authorities to establish the facts through a thorough investigation.
The statement also raised concerns over the circulation of photographs and videos showing Okrika interacting calmly with Oden Ewa shortly before the alleged incident.
While acknowledging that the images were genuine, Okrika’s counsel argued that they did not capture the alleged confrontation itself and therefore should not be treated as a complete representation of what occurred.
“Selective videos and photographs showing our client in a calm interaction with Odenewa prior to the incident are now being circulated. While those images are genuine, they do not represent the complete sequence of events,” the statement said.
The counsel further alleged that attempts to record the confrontation were restricted, resulting in limited footage from the immediate scene.
It consequently called on the management of Hotel 45 to issue an official statement explaining what happened and release all relevant, unedited CCTV recordings covering the areas and period of the incident.
The legal team also disclosed that it had formally notified the Cross River State Police Command and requested an impartial investigation.
It urged people who witnessed the incident to provide information that could assist investigators in establishing the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
The counsel stressed that Okrika’s right to freedom of expression and political commentary should be respected, arguing that criticism of public officials should not result in physical intimidation or violence.
“At the same time, we believe in due process. Every party deserves to be heard and every claim tested with evidence,” the statement added.
The lawyer called on Hotel 45 and the Nigeria Police Force to act swiftly to ensure transparency and justice, maintaining that the complete evidence should determine what transpired.
As of the time of filing this report, there was no statement from Hotel 45, the Cross River State Police Command or the individuals alleged to have been involved in the confrontation.
The allegations remain claims and have not been independently established.
