Apple today updated its list of obsolete products, adding the following devices:
- 2018 13-inch Retina display MacBook Air;
- The 2018 13-inch MacBook Pro features four Thunderbolt 3 ports;
- The 2017 13-inch MacBook Pro features two Thunderbolt 3 ports.
According to Apple’s policy, a product is classified as “Vintage” after five years of being discontinued, and as “Obsolete” after seven years.
Older products can still be repaired if parts are readily available, but obsolete products are usually no longer eligible for official hardware repair services, and Apple will also stop producing related repair parts.
Note: Apple offers a battery-specific repair policy for Mac laptops for up to ten years, calculated from the date of the product’s last sale. Therefore, users of the 2017 and 2018 MacBook Pro and 2018 MacBook Air models may still be eligible for battery replacement services in the future, depending on parts availability.
The 2018 MacBook Air was the first Air model to feature Touch ID and a Retina display. Compared to previous non-Retina displays, the new screen had a higher resolution and more vibrant colors. That same year, Apple also redesigned the MacBook Air, featuring narrower bezels and a thinner, lighter body.
The 2017 MacBook Pro primarily upgraded to an Intel Kaby Lake processor, with other changes being relatively limited. The 2018 update introduced True Tone display support for the first time and featured a third-generation butterfly keyboard.
