The English Premier League has introduced new rules for the 2026/2027 season. Going forward, these rules will prevail. The league adopted some of the rules laid down by the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) in the just concluded 2026 World Cup in the Americas; United States, Canada and Mexico.
Below are the new rules:
⦿ Injured players must now stay off the pitch for at least 𝟏 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐞, up from 30 seconds
⦿ A 𝟓-𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧 for throw-ins and goal-kicks, with the restart reversed if delayed
⦿ Substituted players have just 𝟏𝟎 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐬 to leave the field, or their replacement waits until the next stoppage
⦿ A new VAR review specifically for clearly 𝐰𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝 𝐲𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰 cards resulting in a red
⦿ A trial requiring managers to nominate an outfield player to leave the pitch for a minute whenever play is stopped for a goalkeeper injury
